Federal Government reverses an idiotic policy
In a striking change in policy, the federal government has not only taken steps to help out African Americans in jail, but also helped out African American crack-cocaine drug violators! I bet you didn’t see that coming. In an unprecedented shift in policy, the U.S. Sentencing commission voted to allow almost 20,00 prision inmates who were mostly black to get reduction in their crack cocaine sentences
This is a direct departure from all recent U.S. policy regarding crack cocaine, which they effectively villainized in the 90’s, creating a serious of outrageous drug charges aimed directly at lower income African Americans that cause the destruction of entire inner city communities.
This ruling appears to be a step in the actual, dare I say it? Right direction. Yes, the U.S. government appears to be working on repairing their mistakes, and helping out a demographic that they have long since abused and neglected. This is definitely a step that I never thought would be taken. Good work Sentencing Commission. Well done.
